Cough is very often symptom of respiratory disease, but also very important defense reflex of upper airways. It may well have bad influence on the quality of life so its elimination is very important.
Based on duration it can be classified as acute and chronic. Cough
lasting up to three weeks may be considered acute, up to four to eight
weeks it is considered sub acute cough. Chronic cough is the one
surpassing the eight week. Viral infections of upper airways most often
cause acute cough. They usually appear in fall and winter-early spring
period. In most patients cough is dry and non productive at the
beginning and becoming productive in later stages. Chronic cough appears
in people with chronic obstructive lung disease, and it is often caused
by smoking, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and secretion flux
down the larynx wall.
Cough intensifies in contact with increased quantity of allergens – mite, dust, pollen, weed such as ambrosia etc.
